This is another well known address of Lille photographers, and for good reason : the silhouette of the great Mills does not go unnoticed on the Deûle canal, especially as they are now in the midst of a vast wasteland.
Built in 1921 in a style neo-flamand and abandoned since 1989, Great mills are classified Historical Monument and expect large conversion projects : lofts, Studios, tertiary, cultural and hotel complex… Projects constantly pushed back due to their complexity and disputes with the owner of the premises (read the Voix du Nord). The proximity of the former Rhodia site (classified Seveso) that is also part of the perimeter to redevelop, and uncertainty about the costs of pollution control (basements have been contaminated in the pyralene following a theft of copper) do not facilitate the task.
Pending, Mills, stripped long long, keep their look great even if the framing seems on the verge of collapse. On weekdays, the sounds of the nearby junkyard found echo in the silent buildings and add a spooky touch to the scene.
